Modern Foreign Language - French

Modern Foreign Language Leader: Miss Dunkerley (Hinchliffe Mill School)

At Holme Junior and Infant School we strive for our children to experience wider opportunities to become global citizens. We use our values to shape our vision for the children we teach.

Aspirational- Most of our children are from non-French-speaking backgrounds and are eager to learn the language, often due to a variety of reasons like cultural exposure, family connections, travel interests, academic aspirations, or career goals.

Adventurous- Our children are not only passionate about learning French but are also curious, brave, and eager to explore the world through the French language. Children often show an adventurous spirit in different ways, such as exploring new cultures, learning through travel and cultural exchanges and friendships. This helps with building language confidence and resilience.

Creative- Our children are encouraged to embrace a broad curriculum and French is no exception! Through our careful and thoughtful planning, children experience the culture of France through art and crafts, storytelling and literature, music and culture events (such as Bastille Day).

Resilience- This is a key trait that can be nurtured in our children, and there are various ways in which children are encouraged to develop this quality. Resilience in French-speaking children is often supported through a combination of education, family values, and societal expectations.

Respect- Our children are very respectful towards other cultures and understand that respect is a deeply ingrained value in French culture. This is extended into how our children are educated in the French language, including politeness and formal language, respect for elders, respect for differences and healthy relationships.

Independence- In French culture independence is an important aspect of children’s upbringing. The sense is to help them grow into self-reliant, confident individuals who can navigate the world with autonomy. Values which are synonymous with Hinchliffe Mill School.

Implementation

Implementing the French curriculum in a school setting involves several key steps, as it’s important to align with the National Curriculum while also ensuring that this can be adapted to meet the needs of our children. We use a nationally recognised scheme called Language Angels to fulfil this.  Please see below the long term  plan to ensure an exciting progression through starting off, moving on, early language, intermediate and progressive strands.
