Holme Junior & Infant School

Class 2

Welcome!

Currently, we are made up of 20 ambitious children in Year 3, 4, 5 and 6. Miss White and Mrs Guest are our current Class Teachers. During the morning, LKS2 and UKS2 are split into two groups to focus on reading, writing and mathematics. This means the class sizes are small and teachers have a generous amount of time to dedicate to giving the children the instruction and feedback that will help them move on in their learning.

Feel free to catch us on the door, email via the school office or arrange a telephone call, if you have any questions. We are always more than happy to help!

Learning this term

During the first half term, children will be learning ‘Why the Romans Settled in Britain’. Within this topic, children will learn why the Romans decided to invade and settle in Britain, how people responded to the Roman invasion, why the Roman army was so successful and finally how the Romans influenced and modernised Britain. Children will also look at different artefacts to find out what they tell us about life during the Roman times and learn about chronology.

In the second part of the term, pupils will focus on the Geography topic ‘Why Do People Live near Volcanoes?’ Children will learn that the Earth is constructed in layers, and the crust is divided into tectonic plates. They study the formation and distribution of mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes and use Mount Etna to identify how human interaction shapes a volcanic landscape.

Important Information

Reading

We are passionate about developing life-long readers. We will ensure that all KS2 children will have weekly access to our school library, where they can swap their reading books as well as having a banded book to read at home. In school, your child will be read with at least once a week by an adult. Please ensure that your child is reading little but often at home, as well as in school. We encourage you (or your child) to sign their Reading Records to indicate that they have read at home, either with an adult or independently. Please aim to sign your Reading Record at least X3 weekly

Spellings/Homework

Spelling is taught through the Spelling Shed scheme and children use the app or online platform to practise every week for homework. Alternatively, they can practise with the worksheets sent home. Phonics are also revised in Year 3 and when children require a recap! Each Monday, your child will be tested on their spellings and they will be given their new spellings/homework. Please ensure that your child has handed in their homework to be marked. See below for the spelling hand-out and test dates.

P.E.

Our PE day is Monday. Children should come to school wearing their P.E. kit. On Wednesday, Year 3 & 4 children only need to bring their swimming kit.
